So, I set out to compare and contrast the qualities of Comic Sans and Papyrus with the qualities of the most beloved typeface – Garamond. If Papyrus is the second-most hated font, next to Comic Sans, it makes sense to define Papyrus’s “bad”-ness in comparison with Comic Sans. Surprisingly, I didn’t find this to be true.
If it’s so hated, clearly it must be lacking in fundamentals. To start off, let’s look at Papyrus’s fundamentals as a typeface. The surprisingly solid typographic fundamentals of Papyrus One that sends an important message about the potential downfall of civilization. I believe that James Cameron’s use of Papyrus was an artistic choice. And no, not necessarily because of any aesthetic quality the font has. The most surprising finding of all was that Papyrus could potentially be the perfect font for the film Avatar. There were things I learned about Papyrus that deepened my dislike of the font, but there were other things that helped me appreciate it. (I wish I was kidding.) I’ve edited it down to this long blog post. I spent over a year writing a novel’s worth of words trying to untangle the mess. So, I set about the arduous task of breaking down Why You Hate Papyrus.

It’s another thing entirely for it to be used to represent what would become the top-grossing movie of all time.

Then install whatever is the best AI mod at the moment, and then up the difficulty.ĭunno if such civ 6 mods are available yet, but I'm sure they will once the workshop is out. It’s one thing for Papyrus to be used on the sign of a strip-mall bakery.

You get rid of the silly head start the AI gets that kills the entire early game (war, religion, wonder) with some no bs mod, you keep the food and production boosts that make up for their inability to manage workers and citizens optimally by upping the difficulty, and you improve the AI so they stay relevant through the game and don't fall behind with some AI mod.Ĭiv 6 has a lot more cheats though, I haven't played the game much, but I would be looking at removing the free settlers, removing the free technologies, maybe even removing the free builders they get upon completing a district I think? removing all the free gold cheats. The best combination imo is to play with some AI mod that makes the AI a bit less dumb + a mod that removes some obnoxious cheats + up the difficulty.įor Civ 5, Smart AI + no AI free tech + Immortal difficulty was the right balance for me. It's a an over-simplification and there are a lot of tricks to make it a bit simpler, faster or smarter, but at the end of the day a game like Civ simply is far too complex with too many things to evaluate to create an AI without spending most of the game dev budget on it. the AI has to calculate everything one thought at a time in a perfectly linear notion in a limited time and when you want to find the best option the AI has to evaluate every other option available to it and compare it to every other option.
You can do a lot of calculations in the back of your head without noticing. It can't look at a screen and in an instant get an excerpt of nearly all relevant data like you do. AI is incredibly difficult because a computer does not have the creative thought like you. Now, given that you'd probably still play better than the AI, and this is only one of the few difficulties of AI design. How effective do you think your game would be? You can look at one tile, at one unit, at once building in one city. Imagine playing civilization, but you can only look at one thing at a time. Is the a really difficult AI that does not cheat on this way?
